DISRUPTING THE FASHION INDUSTRY
Hems & Brims empowers the next generation of Black creatives to use their talents to build a lasting legacy in fashion.
Established in 2019, Hems & Brims cultivates pathways for Black creatives to not only enter the fashion industry but to lead and transform it. As a fiscally sponsored project of Community Initiatives, we provide resources, mentorship, and career development opportunities that enable Black talent to build sustainable fashion careers.
Our mission centers on closing the disparity gap and dismantling structural barriers that have historically limited access and opportunity for Black creatives in fashion.
We believe every Black creative deserves access to industry-standard resources and intensive fashion education. Through individualized mentorship, we connect students with established professionals who provide ongoing guidance. We also facilitate workshops, networking events, internships, and volunteer opportunities.
Our virtual mentorship program currently serves students aged 14 to 18, with plans to expand to university students. Our next cohort opens March 7, 2026.
Whether you are a student seeking mentorship, a fashion professional ready to share your expertise, or an organization seeking alignment with efforts toward equity in fashion, we invite you to join us.

Hems & Brims Student Gallery
We’re building a Student Portal for our upcoming 2026 Cohort, which will include a Student Gallery to highlight the work of our students and alumni.
If you’ve participated in Hems & Brims, we invite you to share your designs, artwork, or creative projects to be featured. The gallery is a space to showcase your work, inspire other students, and celebrate the accomplishments of our community.
