DISRUPTING THE FASHION INDUSTRY
Hems & Brims empowers the next generation of Black creatives to use their talents to build a lasting legacy in fashion.
Established in 2019, Hems & Brims creates pathways for Black creatives to enter, lead, and transform the fashion industry. As a fiscally sponsored project of Community Initiatives, we provide mentorship, resources, and career development opportunities that empower Black talent to build sustainable fashion careers and lasting legacies.
Our mission addresses the systemic barriers that have historically marginalized Black creatives within the fashion sector. Through personalized 1:1 mentorship with established industry professionals, fashion education, networking opportunities, and volunteer/internship placements, we provide students with the resources, connections, and support to achieve their goals in fashion and beyond.
In 2025, we launched Black Fashion Legacy, an initiative dedicated to preserving and teaching Black fashion history. A portion of proceeds from Black Fashion Legacy directly supports Hems & Brims programming and the next generation of Black fashion creatives.
Program Pillars
The 4 P's of Hems & Brims
These four pillars form the foundation of our mentorship program, equipping students with the education, guidance, and professional networks they need to thrive in the fashion industry.
-
Through a combination of self-paced courses and live classes, students explore essential topics including Black Fashion History, Fashion Design, Business of Fashion, and Sustainable Fashion. This comprehensive curriculum provides both the historical context and practical foundation needed to thrive in the fashion industry.
-
Each student is paired with an experienced industry professional for one-on-one guidance. Mentors help students identify their strengths, set achievable goals, and develop the specific skills needed to advance their careers with personalized support tailored to each student's unique aspirations.
-
Students work in teams on fashion projects that mirror real-world industry workflows, guided by program alumni. These collaborative experiences teach effective communication, problem-solving, and teamwork while building a supportive community of emerging fashion professionals.
-
Through workshops, guest speaker sessions, and networking events, students gain direct access to established fashion professionals. These opportunities provide career insight, expose students to current industry practices, and help them build meaningful relationships and connections that extend beyond the program.
